A Colorless Basanta Utsav 2025 at Santiniketan

Rabindranath Tagore’s Santiniketan, a place where heritage and the earthy aroma of red soil embrace every corner, witnessed an unprecedented Basanta Utsav this year—one without colors. For the first time in its history, this iconic celebration was held two days prior to Dol Purnima, on March 11, 2025. While the authorities emphasized the need to preserve the site’s heritage, many students of Visva-Bharati expressed disappointment as the festival lacked its traditional vibrancy and grandeur. Basanta Utsav, a cherished event for the university’s students, did not coincide with Holi this year, and entry for outsiders was strictly prohibited.

The celebration began early in the morning at 7 AM in Gour Prangan with Rabindra Sangeet performances, including the soulful “Ore Grihabasi Khol Dwar Khol Laglo Je Dol.” Students, professors, staff, and ashramites participated in the event. However, tourists were entirely banned from attending, and strict guidelines ensured that no one played with *abir* (colored powders), a stark departure from the festival’s usual joyous spirit.

Since 2019, Visva-Bharati has opted for private celebrations of Basanta Utsav to manage crowds and maintain order. This shift has led to smaller-scale events within the campus while discouraging large public gatherings. This year, even local celebrations in Bolpur and Santiniketan were restricted, leaving many visitors and locals disheartened.

Adding to this year’s changes, the Forest Department imposed restrictions on festivities at Sonajhuri Haat on March 14 (Dol Purnima). Although tourists and locals will be allowed access to Sonajhuri Khoai on Holi day, playing with colors has been completely prohibited.
